History of 202 entry

The 202nd entry was the second of the Craft Apprentice entries. 201 entry had arrived at No 1 School of Technical Training RAF Halton in September 1964. The 90 plus young men, who would become 202 entry, arrived at Wendover station, near Aylesbury, Buckinghamshire on 4 January 1965. We were attested into the Royal Air Force on 5 January 1965.

The craft apprentice scheme was designed to provide skilled craftsmen to service and maintain the TSR2 and the new generation of aircraft. The technician apprentice scheme was similarly designed to provide more highly qualified technicians to work alongside the craftsmen. Both schemes were to replace the aircraft apprentice schemes, which had been introduced in the nineteen twenties by The Lord Trenchard.

The apprentices of the Trenchard scheme are affectionately known as brats. Both craft and technician apprentice schemes were worthy successors of the aircraft apprentices.
The TSR2 never went into service as the Wilson government of the mid-1960s decided to scrap the aircraft, and to order F111 aircraft from the USA. The F111 order was cancelled in 1968. The craft apprentice scheme was redesigned to train skilled craftsmen, who would qualify as junior technicians, and become the senior NCOs of the RAF.

The Entry Commander was Flt. Lt. Brian Carter and his Adjutant was Fg. Off. Ambler, who had just been promoted from the SNCO ranks. Brian Carter and Stuart Morgan last had a chat in the Running Horse bar at the RAF Club in about 1985. Brian was working for a commercial airline as a pilot. Recent enquiries (April 2009) reveal that Brian is not a current member of the RAF Club.

The 202 entry passed out on 14 December 1967. 106 entry (Aircraft Apprentices) and 305 entry (Administrative Apprentices) passed out on the same parade. The parade began at 10.30 am. Although the graduating apprentices had all been up and on parade since “early doors”.

The Reviewing Officer was the Rt. Hon. the Lord Shackleton OBE, MA (Minister of Defence for the Royal Air Force). The Reviewing Officer was accompanied by Air Marshall W. E. Coles, AOC in C, Technical Training Command; AVM B. Robinson, AOC 24 Group; and the very illustrious air ace and New Zealander, Air Commodore Al C. Deere, Commandant, No 1 School of Technical Training.

Stephen Pryde sent me and email today to say that he runs an electronics repair company in Australia. A reply was sent and copied to all members of the entry association, with a request for Stephen to forward his contacts details e.g. phone number.

Stephen said, "Whist carrying out some research on the internet I found your website and it brought back some very old memories. I do not know if you remember me but I was a member of B flight Stephen Pryde. I now live in Australia and have my ownContinue

Hi Stuart, you may notice the rather nice photo of John Norman on my page. That was the only photo on my laptop I have of Halton days, but for some reason it's shown cropped with me and Danny Elliott beheaded. I'll change it when I find out how to do it!!!

The Royal Air Force Halton Aircraft Apprentices Association (RAFHAAA) was formed in September 1980 to meet the need for a point of focus for all those young boys who went through the "Halton Grinder" and emerged at the other end as fully-fledged "Trenchard Brats"!

If you are not already a member of this elite band then why not get in touch? The association has approximately 3500 members and holds a major reunion at Halton every three years (the next one is scheduled for September 2010).

The RAFHAA twice yearly publishes a magazine called, "The Haltonian" and, in addition, sends a Newsletter two or three times a year to all members. It also performs the vital function of bringing ex-Apprentices together in renewed comradeship. The RAFHAAA is also a registered charity.

The Association may be able to assist you in making contact with other members of your Entry, most of whom now have their own Entry Association. (Go to the "Entries" button on the Menu to check if your's has been updated. Or, if your Entry can't be found, consider getting organised and create a site).

155 were the last entry to pass out (in 1993)

The RAF Aircraft Apprentice Scheme was initiated by Lord Trenchard at the No.1 School of Technical Training, RAF Halton in 1922. Lord Trenchard started the 'Aircraft Apprentice Scheme' in 1920 at Halton camp, but the site was not ready to accept apprentices until 1922 (See Tribute). The first 5 Entries were sent to 'RAF Cranwell' and the first HALTON Entry was the 6th Entry in 1922. Between 1922 and 1993, when the scheme ended, over 40,000 young men known, more or less affectionately as Halton 'Brats' had graduated.

The Government had purchased the Halton estate (previously commandeered during the First World War) on Trenchard's recommendation when Rothschild died in 1918. There were already ample and well-equipped technical shops in existence and it was near to London, a point in its favour since the Chief of the Air Staff believed that the boy trainees should be near enough for friends and parents to visit. On the other hand, Trenchard felt that officer cadets would be better off in the flat countryside of Lincolnshire than anywhere near London.
